General Education Center


Once a subdivision of the Division of Academic Affairs Office when Shih Chien University still had only college status, the General Education Center was formed out of the Department of General Courses in August 1997.

Its formulation is in accordance with the founding principles established by Mr. Tung-Ming Shieh:

  • practice and realization;
  • cultivation, regulation, governance, and peace;
  • promoting worldwide unity

and the idea of education forwarded by the chancellors of the University:

  • Coordination of Living Education,
  • General Education,
  • Information Education and Professional Education.

The object of research and development at the Center is based on the pedagogical goals of the University:

  • To perform research and promote the technology of the applied science of living,
  • and to enhance the welfare and meaning of life.

The courses encompass three major fields:

  • humanities,
  • social science,
  • and natural science.

The aim of education is to help students build up an integrated sense of humanity, in which two dimensions in the spirit of General, Liberal Education should be emphasized: on the one hand, students should learn techniques from different perspectives to enhance their lives, and furthermore create a happy life of their own; on the other, through the cultivation of spirit, and training in independent thinking, and decision making about values judgment, the complete character of the individual can be fulfilled.
